The California Housing and Finance Agency’s (CalHFA) ADU Grant Program has made remarkable strides toward addressing the ongoing housing crisis plaguing local municipalities statewide. With $100 million already allocated to the maximum number of grant recipients, many homeowners are wondering what options are left to help them finance the development of their ADUs.
What homeowners can do for the State to release additional ADU funds
When the CalHFA grant funds got depleted at the end of October 2022, leaving thousands of hopeful homeowners with no access to ADU predevelopment funds, HPP Cares had to answer questions from homeowners about when next the grant funds will be made available. Part of the HHP Cares’ response to the need for additional funding was to invite homeowners to make their voices heard through a sign-on letter. The aim of the sign-on letter is to request the State to make available the additional $50 million, earmarked for the ADU grant program, to homeowners on the waitlist. These funds are currently on hold while CalHFA engages with several proprietors to discuss the best way to utilize this additional grant money.
